Myall Classic Paddling Ultramarathon

Anzac Park

Date:  Saturday 16 September 2017.

The Myall Classic is a major ultramarathon event on the NSW paddler’s calendar. It is held on the Myall River at Tea Gardens each September on the last Saturday before the school holidays, taking both competitive and recreational paddlers up the Myall River and return.

There are a range of distances and starting times, intended to see all paddlers complete their chosen course by early afternoon, and in time for Presentations at 2:45pm.

Distances offered are 12km, 27km and 47km, the longer course being a perfect shakedown for the Hawkesbury Canoe Classic held in late October.PNSW Myall Gary Roberts1

Due to its protected nature, the Myall Classic is a safe, scenic though testing event in the largely unspoilt Great Lakes Marine Park. Conditions can vary considerably though the usual scenario presents paddlers with clear blue skies and warm weather. A light Easterly breeze is usually present in the early afternoon.

The Parra Paddlefest is getting closer. Be part of the action in the heart of Parramatta River at 3.00pm on Feb 12th.

We tested the slalom and freestyle entry ramp this morning, and it worked a treat. Will add another dimension of excitement of the event. Sprint, Slalom, Freestyle, Boatercross, SUP and Canoe Polo players, its time to commit. Why not enter now...its only $20, and all entry fees are returned as prizemoney to placegetters.
What you get:
Sprint...singles match racing down the 200m sprint course, open to Singles in K1, C1, women and men. Sorry, the logistics of managing doubles are just too difficult this first time around. You will also get a chance to paddle in the warm-up time prior to the event, and in the separate warm-up area during the event.
Slalom...head to head racing starting on the entry slide, and swapping sides for a cumulative total. Around 8 gates in various directions. Best overall totals progress.
SUP...Starting near the main stage, you will have 2-3 short laps of the slalom poles and back to the finish. Practice those turns! One on one, winner progresses.
Boater Cross....for creek boats. A twisting course up the river. Knockout format till the fastest two paddlers remain. They will face off in a duel against an armada of paddling defenders in an 8-ball final. First past the defenders wins. Demolition derby on water!
Canoe Polo...a 4-way polo comp just downstream of the footbridge will show off the sport. Free entry to Canoe Polo.
Please support PaddleNSW as it promotes your sport to the wider audience, in this new format, the 'Parra Paddlefest'.

Race Records have been updated.
Unfortunately for those who chose the wrong start time, your record times are recorded as minimum allowable time for that start.
Best choose the correct start time next year!

A special thanks to all who volunteered to help run the event, some at the last minute. Your help was invaluable, but there were still a few more needed. If you can volunteer for next year and let us know early, it will really help us with spreading the workload.

The Myall Classic has grown to be one of the biggest paddling events in the state, and we're doing what we can to keep improving things. Sorry for those who missed out on finishers medals, and those who didn't get their trophies. Also those couple with perpetual trophies that need to be engraved.
Please let us know at myallclassic@paddlensw.org.au and we'll get things sorted for you.
We've lots of ideas for improvement for next year. If you have any of your own ideas, please send them through by email too.
And don't forget to convert your Myall Classic paddling performance into a Hawkesbury Canoe Classic entry.

To all those paddlers who made the 14th Myall Classic such a great event....thank you very much. I am looking over Anzac Park a couple of hours after the event, and you wouldn't know there had been over 320 paddlers gathered here earlier. With favourable tides, very little wind and total sunshine during the event, we couldn't ask for better conditions, and several race records were smashed. Matt Blundell once again won the Open Singles, while we had our third different female winner in three years with Kristy Benjamin taking the Open Women's honours. With the dedicated trailer parking spaces, the boat drop-off zone was free for everyone to use. Most paddlers took their rubbish home with them in the bags provided, and the results system eventually provided accurate results direct to the registration website prior to the presentations.
Obviously we will be working to fix some of the problems encountered this year, particularly with some of the women's results that were hidden amongst the open results. But I'm sure we will have this sorted for next year. And the entry system will be more seamless with the proper integration of the Paypal system into the website.
